Hailing from Magura, Jessore in southwestern Bangladesh, Shakib is a penetrating and economical left arm spinner and talented middle order batsman. In a team known for their inconsistency, Shakib has been a rare find excelling in all departments including batting, bowling, and captaincy. Time and time again, Shakib has rescued Bangladesh from perilous positions and has been the key figure behind their victories. His performances have been such that he is currently rated by the ICC as the top all rounder in One Day Internationals (ODIs), ahead of cricketing greats such as Jacques Kallis, Shahid Afridi, and Daniel Vettori.

As of October 17th, 2010, Shakib has played in 98 ODI matches scoring 2678 runs at an average of 34.33 with five centuries, 15 half centuries, and a best score of 134 not out. He has also taken 120 one day wickets with an economy rate of 4.21. Shakib has also played in 21 Test matches scoring 1179 runs with one century and five half centuries at an average of 31.02. His bowling figures in Test matches include 75 scalps at a very economical 2.84.
