The Department of Biochemistry, University of Dhaka in an Academic Committee meeting on the 24th of March, 1998 had proposed the formation of a new department called Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology considering the advancement in this area. This proposal was approved by the Faculty of Biological Sciences on a meeting on the 29th March, 1998. The decision to establish this new department called Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology under the Faculty of Biological Sciences was taken by the Syndicate on November 20, 1999.
