 | SMEs to be developed in clusters

The SME Foundation has launched a study to identify clusters consisting of small and medium businesses across the country and solve their problems.
Officials said the foundation always works for development of the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Bangladesh.
“So far, we have worked for individual SMEs and members of various associations. But questions could be asked about our model,” said an official of the foundation.
He said the foundation cannot reach out to all the SMEs through its existing mode of activities. “There are limitations as most SMEs are scattered across the country. Furthermore, most of them are not associated with any association.”
“For this reason, we have launched a study to know about the clusters of the government-fixed 11 booster sectors.”
“Once we identify them, we will be able to reach out to them easily. We can hear their problems and solve those with the help of the concerned authorities,” Md Mujibur Rahman, deputy general manager (Technology and ICT, Policy Advocacy and Research) of the foundation, told The Daily Star.
He said clusters have developed across the country. “There are many clusters in the country, which have been developed either naturally or with support from the government. But we do not have any formal listing.”
“Our study will identify them, bring out their current conditions and the problems they are facing. Findings of the study will help us solve the problems that are common to all,” he said. “It is easy to develop the SMEs through a cluster-based approach.”
