 | Protests continue in Phulbari 29 August, 2006
At least five people were killed and hundreds of others were injured on Saturday when members of the law enforcement agencies opened fire on thousands of local protesters, who were demanding withdrawal of all activities of the Asia Energy from Phulbari. Police, however, confirmed death of three people during the Saturday's clash between the protesters and law enforcers.
Organisers of the protest said five persons were still remained missing following Saturday's bloody incidents.
The protesters, in presence of their central leaders, at a rally at Phulbari took vow to continue their ongoing indefinite hartal (general strike) till realisation of their demands, including the total withdrawal of the Asia Energy from the area.
Experts and economists have continued to extend support to the demand asking the government to immediately cancel the coalmine deal with the Asia Energy, as the agreement has breached national interests.
