 | President resumes office ending all speculations

President Prof Dr Iajuddin Ahmed yesterday resumed his responsibilities after one month ending all speculations centring the highest office of the Republic.
The President will attend office from Sunday (July 9), a notification of the Cabinet Division said yesterday. The declaration came on the heel of the main opposition Awami League’s (AL’s) allegation that the President was under “house arrest” in his palace.
The Cabinet Division issued the notification as the medical board headed by National Professor Brig General MA Malik expressed satisfaction over the health condition of the President after thoroughly examining him yesterday.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and AL President Sheikh Hasina yesterday sought appointment to visit President Prof Dr Iajuddin Ahmed.
Sources close to the AL leadership yesterday told The New Nation Sheikh Hasina might seek Presidential intervention to help resolve the current political impasse over the implementation of the proposal for electoral reforms when she calls on the President, if deadlock in the dialogue process is not over.
The AL leadership took the decision on Wednesday, as a similar move had proved successful in January 1995, when a similar deadlock was created due to the failure of the diplomats-brokered dialogue on the opposition demand for Constitutional provision for election under the Caretaker government.
The then President Abdur Rahman Biswas helped leaders of the two major political parties—the ruling BNP and the opposition AL—to sit at a dialogue following a three-member AL delegation led by party Presidium member Amir Hossain Amu called on him at Bangabhaban. Two other members were AL Presidium member Tofail Ahmed and Mohammad Nasim.
