 | President accords reception to Yunus

Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus yesterday was accorded state-honour, the first of its kind since independence in 1971, for receiving the Nobel Peace Prize 2006.
President and Chief Adviser of the Caretaker Government Prof Dr Iajuddin Ahmed accorded him the reception at the Bangabhaban in presence of the council of advisers, former presidents, former ministers, justices, political leaders, foreign envoys, academics, senior journalists and civil and military officials.
Addressing the reception, President Iajuddin Ahmed paid tributes to Prof Yunus for earning the country the rare honour through his experiment on micro credit saying that he has paved the way for national unity through his achievement.
“The atmosphere that has been created to establish peace in the country will remove all conflicts and disputes from the national life,” he said.
The President said being a small and developing country Bangladesh received a lot from the developed nations, while the world took from Bangladesh the experience of micro financing.
Terming the award of Nobel Peace Prize to Prof Yunus a unique achievement in post liberation Bangladesh, he said, “Bangladesh has secured a glorious place in the world map.”
Emphasising the need for a peaceful atmosphere for holding a free and fair election in the country, the Chief Adviser hoped that the window for establishing peace, which has been created by wining the coveted Nobel Prize by Dr Yunus, would help establish an atmosphere of peace and stability in the society.
