 | Normalcy returns to garment sector 27 May, 2006
Production in the garments factories was as usual yesterday as most workers and employees joined the work amid tight security measures undertaken by the government in the troubled areas.
Most of the factories resumed their production on Thursday last after two days’ vandalism by the unruly elements which left around 300 factories damaged and 19 others burnt.
Home Ministry sources said that a total of 7, 000 law enforcers including RAB, armed police and Para Military BDR had been deployed in the troubled areas to maintain law and order there
We have no option but to resume operation to maintain export schedule failing which country’s most potential sector will lose market, said an employer.
Some entrepreneurs , however, apprehend fresh outbreak of vandalism in the areas where most of the enterprises are located as the vested groups are out to destroy most potential export-oriented sector in a planned manner. They termed the last week’s vandalism as a blueprint to destroy garments sector rendering thousands of workers and employees jobless
They also suspected that vested groups instigated outsiders and local musclemen to let loose a reign of terror in the industrial belts to frustrate both local and foreign investors..
Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) drew the attention of the government to the need for proper protection of garments factories so that the production in the factories could continue peacefully.
