Govt accepts 6-point demands: Asia Energy withdrawn from Phulbari
30 August, 2006

Government negotiators assured Phulbari demonstrators of accepting all of their six-point demand that includes withdrawal of the UK-based company Asia Energy from the coal-mine project.

The movement committee agreed to call off their indefinite hartal in Phulbari municipal area, which plunged into a turmoil following the killing of several people in police-BDR firing to contain violence during a siege to the Asia Energy company office last Friday.

Official sources said the deal came “in a closed-door meeting between the demonstrators and government emissaries at Parbatipur upazila parishad auditorium Wednesday night”.

Their other demands include probe into the killing of the demonstrators to bring those responsible to justice and compensation for those killed and affected in the ruthless action by the law-enforcers.

The deal was signed in the meeting between the government side and the Phulbari Protection Committee and the National Committee for Oil, Gas, Minerals and Industries and Port Protection after a long-drawn negotiation.

Mayor of Rajshahi Mijanur Rahman Minu MP and Deputy Minister for Food and Disaster Management Asadul Habib Dulu and local administration officials were on government side at the talks. On the other side was a 30-member body led by local unit convenor of the National Committee Syed Saiful Islam.
