Death sentence to seven JMB kingpins confirmed
31 August, 2006

A High Court Bench of the Supreme Court yesterday confirmed the death sentences of the seven kingpens of the banned Jamaat-ul-Mujahedin Bangladesh (JMB), including its leaders Shaekh Abdur Rahman and Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai, in the Jhalakathi judges killing case.

The five other convicts are JMB Majlis-e-Shura members—Ataur Rahman Sunny, Abdul Awal and Khaled Saifullah, and suicide bombers Iftekhar Hasan Al Mamun and Asadur Rahman Arif.

Of the convicts, Asadur Rahman Arif remains fugitive since the heinous killing of the two judges in Jhalakati town on November 14 last year.

Besides, the High Court Bench comprising Justice M Ali Asgar Khan and
Justice Emdadul Haque rejected the appeal of Iftekhar Hasan Al Mamun, a bomb-expert of the JMB, only who appealed for reviewing the lower court verdict.

On completion of hearing in the death reference case the court delivered the judgement amid tight security around the Supreme Court premises.
The court observed that the charges against all of them had been proved beyond all reasonable doubts.

"Islam does not permit what they did in the name of Islam," the court also observed while delivering the final judgement.

Huge contingent of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), police and plainclothesmen were deployed in and around the court. None was allowed to enter the court premises without interrogations.
