The eighth Parliament passed as many as 185 laws (bills), including the 14 th amendment to the Constitution that provided for 45 reserved seats for the women in the House with a provision of distribution of those seats among political parties, having representation in Parliament, according to their strength in the legislature.
The present Parliament was elected in the last general elections on October 1 in 2001 and went into its first session on the 26 days later. The House would be automatically dissolved after 23 days on October 27 having completed its five-year tenure.
The tenure of the present BNP-led four-party alliance government would also come to an end with the dissolution of Parliament on October 27 when a non-party Caretaker government would take over the rein of the country to supervise the next general elections, scheduled for January 2007.
While reading out the prorogation order of President Prof Dr Iajuddin Ahmed to the 23rd session, Speaker Barrister Mohammad Jamiruddin Sircar said this House would not be called into session again.
Constitutional experts, however, said Parliament could meet at an emergency session anytime until it was dissolve.
On the last day, besides Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, also the Leader of the House, and Leader of the Opposition Sheikh Hasina, top leaders of other political parties addressed the concluding ceremony. They included Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami, Begum Raushan Ershad of Jatiya Party (Ershad) Bangabir Abdul Quader Siddiqui of Krishak Sramik Janata League, Anwar Hossain Manju of Jatiya Party (JP) and Muftee Wakkas of Islami Oikya Jote.
