 | CEC may step down 20 November, 2006
Three advisers of the caretaker government who met Chief Election Commissioner Justice M A Aziz yesterday reportedly put pressure on him either to resign or go on long leave of absence.
Although the advisers did not spell out the outcome of their meeting with the CEC, it transpired that Justice Aziz was also told of their inability to extend security support in case he does not take either of the two options.
Sources said that CEC Justice MA Aziz sought two-day’s time to communicate his response to the suggestions made by the Caretaker Advisers. Before making his choice knows the CEC in expected to meet President and Chief Adviser Prof Dr. Iajuddin Ahmed today.
The Advisers, the sources said, also assured the CEC of a safe trip to a foreign country in the event of acceptance of the suggestions or his case may be referred to the Supreme Judicial Council for decision.
Adviser Mahbubul Alam told a news conference after a meeting of the Council of Advisers last night that they expected an outcome of their efforts made for over a week between 24 and 48 hours. He said that they have ultimately found a solution and hoped that it would make the concerned quarters happy.
Adviser Mahbubul Alam, however, declined to elaborate on what they had offered to the CEC. “If we say things well in advance, then the solution or the problem might affected and the progress made in this regard marred, ” he added.
Earlier in the afternoon the three Advisers, Mahbubul Alam, M. Azizul Haq and Advocate Sultana Kamal, who met the CEC, reported the outcome to the President and Chief Adviser at Bangabhaban.
UNB adds :“We see light at the end of the tunnel…We expect a good result regarding this delicate issue within next 24 to 48 hours,” Information Adviser said in a press conference..
Despite a volley of questions shot by inquisitive journalists, Adviser Alam would not specifically tell what could be the problem-shooting formula but said, “ We expect a result that would be acceptable to all—and that would be welcome one. “All the three advisors attended the press conference.
