 | Bus falls into Turag : 50 garment workers missing 06 October, 2006
A bus along with more than 50 passengers, mainly garment workers on board plunged into the turbulent waters of river Turag near Salehpur Bridge in Aminbazar yesterday.
All the workers were from the Aklima Sports Knitwear, a readymade garments factory. Local people started rescue operation immediately after the bus plunged into the river. Later, fire brigade personnel joined the rescue operation. However, they could not recover any body from the ill-fated bus. Although 14 workers were rescued after the bus plunged into the river, the rests are feared swept away by the strong current of the river.
Witnesses said the bus plunged into the river after being slipped from the rain-soaked road on the bridge.
Quoting a rescued passenger Mohammad Nasim, Sub Inspector (SI) of Savar police station, told The New Nation that there were some 20 to 25 passengers were on board the bus.
However, Amzad Hossain, cutting manager of Arlima Sports Knitwear, said that the Mirpur-14 bound bus (Dhk-Met-Kha-1865) had left the factory at Jirabo in Savar at around 1 pm carrying around 50 workers. All the workers hailed from Mirpur, Amzad said. Talking to The New Nation at around 5 pm, SI Nasim said that they had not found any body from the ill-fated bus or in the river.
"I think all the passengers swam ashore. We are not fearing any deaths," he added.
Narrating the incident, police, fire fighters and locals said that it occurred at around 1:45 pm when the bus plunged into the river breaking the guardrails of Salehpur Bridge when the driver lost control of the vehicle.
Hearing a hue and cry, locals rushed to the spot and began rescuing the victims.
