 | BGMEA threatens sit-in in front of Bangabhaban 19 November, 2006
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) yesterday threatened a sit-in programme in front of the Bangabhaban unless the ongoing political deadlock was resolved within 4.00 am on Monday.
The 12-hour long ultimatum began on 4.00 pm on Sunday was announced yesterday at an urgent press conference held in the BGMEA conference room.
President of the organisation SM Fazlul Huq feared that the ongoing political stalemate might paralyse the country’s economy like Sri Lanka from where the foreign buyers left. Export earnings of the country reduced by 50 per cent in the recent years, he said.
Calculating the losses during one-day strike in the garment sector to Tk 400 crore he said the industry will not be able to continue to run its wheel if the standoff prolongs.
“I have received several phone calls from buyers during the last four-day strike where they sought assurance of getting delivery timely. We are on the brink of loosing the market to neighbouring countries,” he said.
He urged the 10 Advisers and the Caretaker Chief to act immediately to save the US$ 8 billion garment industry.
Former president of the association Tipu Munshi said garment factories were closed down for 10 days during the last 22 days. How can a sector sustain if such situation prolongs, he asked.
