 | BDR, BSF trade fire along Sylhet border 10 August, 2006
Indian Border Security Force (BSF) and Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) again exchanged gunfire at Amalshid border in Zakiganj upazila for nearly eight hours Wednesday-Thursday creating panic and tension in the area.
There was no report of any casualty from the exchange of gunfire that began at 11 pm Wednesday and continued till 7 am Thursday.
However, Khalilur Rahman, 70, a resident of Amalshid village, died of cardiac arrest apparently from the impact of heavy sound created by mortar shells fired by BSF.
A tense situation was prevailing in the border area for the last two months as BDR foiled several attempts by BSF to capture 296 acres of Bangladesh land at Amalshid border.
Local sources said BSF members of Raninagar camp fired three rounds of bullet towards Bangladesh territory at about 11 pm Wednesday forcing the BDR jawans to return the fire.
A local BDR commander said BDR jawans responded to the unprovoked firing by BSF. Local residents deserted their homes due to eruption of tension two months back.
A resident of Uttarkul village said bullets fired by BSF fell near his house, seven kilometres inside Bangladesh territory during the nightlong exchange of gunfire. He said he came to know that a BDR jawan was hurt in the firing by BSF.
