Bangladesh ranks 40th in gas reserve
25 July, 2006

Bangladesh ranks 40th in the world in terms of proven gas deposits, a latest global survey showed.

The survey conducted by the CIA revealed that Bangladesh has a reserve of 300,200,000,000 cubic metres (cu m) proven gas reserve as against the highest deposit of 47,570,000,000,000 cu m in Russia. The findings taken from the world factbook clearly points to the fact that the recoverable reserve is not unlimited and export of gas suggested by certain quarters is not favourable for the country.

When contacted Energy Adviser Mahmudur Rahman told The New Nation that he did not take cognizance of the fact since what he said different organisations were putting different figures over Bangladesh's gas reserve.

"We believe the figure of the natural gas reserve that has been unearthed by the government," he said adding, "We had 20.28 Tcf (trillion cubic feet) gas reserve. Of the reserve we have already used 6 Tcf gas and now we have a reserve of 14 Tcf gas.

According to the world factbook the total gas reserve across the world is 174,600,000,000,000 cu m.

Among the 98 countries, Iran is in the second position with a proven reserve of 26,620,000,000,000 cu m gas while Qatar in the third position with 25,770,000,000,000 cu m gas followed by Saudi Arabia with 6,544,000,000,000 cu m, UAE with 6,006,000,000,000 cu m and USA with 5,353,000,000,000 cu m.

South Africa is in the lowest position with its 28,320,000 cubic metre of reserve gas.
