Bangladesh's interim government has banned all political meetings indefinitely as it gears up for fresh elections.
The ruling uthorities issued the order at the weekend after main party leaders Sheikh Hasina and Begum Khaleda Zia referred to political issues at non-political anniversaries and ceremonies.
The new ban refers to "indoor political activity" and follows an earlier block on public political events such as strikes after a state of emergency was imposed on January 11.
Some non-political events were originally allowed by the interim government but these have now been stopped.
"Recently it has been noticed that some political parties have been misusing the flexibility granted under the emergency rules," the home ministry said.
"They are trying to undermine the state of emergency by not strictly adhering to the provisions of the emergency," the statement said.
"So the government has decided to ban all political activities - both indoors and outdoors - with immediate effect."
