A tornado swept six villages in Sharankhola upazila of the district on Saturday night killing five people and injuring over 50 others.
The dead were identified as Abdul Gani Hawlader, 70, of Paschim Rajapur village, two siblings—Russel, 15, and Mohidul, 10-- of Rekia Rajapur and Jamal, 45, of Dakkhin Badhal.
“A large number of houses and trees were blown off in the twister,” says a firsthand account of the ravages.
Locals and officials said the violent storm, lasting little over a minute, lashed at Mejurbaria, Rekia Rajapur, Dhansagar, Bandhaghata, Dakkhin Badhal and Savarer Par villages at about 9pm.
More than 500 houses, schools and religious institutions were reported damaged and hundreds of trees uprooted in the season’s first major lashing by tornado.
Some of the injured were rushed to local hospital.
District administration estimated the extent of damage at Tk 1 crore.
Deputy Commissioner Md Moyeenuddin visited the calamity-wrecked villages and the injured in the hospital. He also distributed money and rice to the affected people.
District and police administrations started rescue operation in the afternoon.
At least 12 people were injured when tornado swept over Brittibirela and Chandgarh villages in Dumuria upazila Saturday evening.
While visiting the villages, UNB district correspondent also found 17 cattle killed and 50 houses blown away by the twister.
Crops on vast tracts of land were also damaged.
The victims took shelter in the local Birela Jam-e-mosque and were passing their days “in distress”, locals said.
