 | 4 cops, Juba Dal leader killed by extremists 25 August, 2006
Suspected extremists killed four police and a local jubadal leader, and injured 50 others at a crowded village market at Chowbaria in Manda upazila under Naogaon district Friday evening, police and eye-witnesses said.
After the carnage, the extremists also took away four firearms along with about 100 rounds of bullets from police, Rajshahi's Divisional Inspector General Naim Ahmed told BDNEWS.
The killing occurred after a fierce gun battle between the extremists and a patrol team of police at about 6 pm, he said.
No groups claimed the responsibility immediately, but Ahmed said the suspected extremists left the scene, chanting slogans in the name of the outlawed "Purbo Banglar Communist Party (Red Flag)".
Among the five deceased, the four police were slaughtered to death after the bomb explosions and the gun battle. Another wounded Jubadal leader died on the way to a local hospital, while Abdur Rahim, Vice President of local BNP, was being treated with severe bullet wounds in his head, hospital sources said.
The killed police personnel were identified as SI Firoz Hossain, constables Babul Islam, Faridul Islam and Askan Mia. Another was identified as Nader Ali, BNP's Manda thana Jubadal organisation secretary.
